Generally speaking, I think American society is so very tolerant of weirdos that there’s plenty of room for alternative sorts of self-actualization. Whether or not that sort of success will prove valuable beyond the self has to do with one’s ability to make sense of the world as it is without wishful thinking.
I think it’s just fine to be punk. I think think it’s fine to be a rebel. Ultimately, however, you have to make yourself useful to others beside yourself. So while self-possession can break down barriers of you tripping over your own feet, you still have to up your second order and third order epistemic skills.
